As a game a few dozen hours in length, there are also a bunch of other elements that were barely touched upon, especially in combat. For one, there's a Rage mode that gives you powerful weapons such as Uzis or a samurai sword dependant on your character, and although it lasts for a limited period, is something that can help out in a spot of bother. Experience from missions and killing zombies helps you unlock new abilities through skill trees, while workbenches allow you to use spare components to create powerful weapon upgrades. There are even more powerful enemy types to square against - such as a beefed-up, towering zombie that'll send you flying with a single punch - that'll keep you on your toes.

The game burst into the public eye with Techland's first cinematic trailer, depicting the last moment of a doomed holidaying family. The trailer is surprisingly effective and tugs firmly on your heartstrings. It's easy to get excited about a cinematic trailer, but it showed no gameplay. While the trailer makes the game seem more terrifying than it plays, the concept it introduced was horror in the sun and a zombie outbreak approached in an adult way. Which the game, so far, delivers.

(probably) On that note, I was recently invited down to Melbourne for the chance to preview the first hour of Techland's Dead Island. Hosted by Mana Bar Melbourne, the infectiously fun gaming/bar mash-up, our press event was followed by a community tiki-themed zombie bash. Because the undead love a good party.

Back in the hut, a mysterious voice over the radio suggests that everyone make their way to a lifeguard building located further down the beach, and it's at this point that Dead Island begins proper. While your first quest is to retrieve a security card from a nearby apartment, you're free to explore the resort area at your own leisure, pillaging items and cracking zombie skulls. The beach directly outside is open, spacious and fairly safe, but the resort's layout becomes more complex and niche-ridden as you make your way further inland amongst the apartments, making the chances of a surprise zombie attack more likely. Dead Island offers a good contrast between bright, open outdoor areas to the dark and claustrophobic indoors that require a far more careful approach when exploring, as well as the chance to discover more more cash, weapon components and audio logs.

There's a hidden strategy to walking around in a group ,as each playable character has a certain function. Xian Mei, for example, is an 'assassin' class. whereas Sam B is a tank. Zombies are more likely to go straight for Sam than Xian, so it's a matter of using these known behaviours to your advantage. Still, the different classes have slightly less meaning in single-player as there's no group that follows you around.It's just you and so a lot of the strategy of taking on the undead denizens is lost.

Hands on with "Dead Island"

While playing with strangers is not the ideal environment for teamwork, my compatriots and I did a decent job progressing through the zombie horde. Actually, it was like joining a room of randoms online. You need to help one another by reviving each other when downed, but based on my demo it was hard to tell if Dead Island will require the same amount of teamwork as the Left 4 Dead series.

Zombies have damage zones in their heads, torso, and all four limbs. If you are using a sharp bladed weapon, you can sever any of these points. If you are using blunt weapon, then those same points will instead become bludgeoned and broken. You also have to take into account the assassin class, Xian Mei, who can deal special damage to an enemies back. There is a lot of strategy in where and what you attack an enemy with, which should keep the combat interesting over the course of the game. The game won't, however, be easy. To get a lot of those rare and expensive weapons, you will have to save money, scavenge, and make a lot of difficult choices with how to use your limited funds. You will also have to make hard choices in how your character develops. When you first start the game, all four classes will largely be the same, but as you open up the tech tree, each class will become widely different, giving you a lot more perks and options in combat. The game will be a constant struggle for survival, but at least they are giving you plenty of tools to fight the zombie hoards.
